August was a month where the railway seemed to leap forward on every front. The long‑planned steelwork for the new shed at 83D finally rose from the ground, transforming from piles of metal in the yard into a visible, impressive structure. After weeks of drilling, aligning, cutting, and preparing components, the first frames were lifted into place and bolted together. More sections followed through the month, with rails cleaned, trimmed, primed, and positioned ready for the next phase. Watching the frame take shape became one of the most satisfying milestones of the summer.
Alongside the construction work, the team tackled a wide range of essential maintenance and improvements. A troublesome pointset outside shed 83C was re‑gauged and repaired, improving wagon movements. Brambles and vegetation were cleared along key stretches of the line, and pointsets across the railway were lubricated to keep operations smooth. The yard continued its steady transformation, with more stock under cover and the whole area looking cleaner and more organised than it has in years.
The workshops were just as active. The Mars boiler received extensive cleaning and fresh coats of red oxide primer, giving it a noticeably smarter appearance. The Wickham trolley project reached an exciting moment when the chassis was started and test‑run for the first time, showing plenty of power. Work continued on the motorised trolley refurbishment, and new workshop equipment, including a heavy steel welding table, took shape. Even the Trecwn wagons had their moment, successfully tested across the newly repaired pointwork.
Passenger operations were a highlight throughout August, especially during the Children’s Activity Days and weekend open events. Across the month, the railway ran multiple trains and carried hundreds of passengers, with individual days reaching 99, 100, and even 104 riders. By mid‑month the season total had already passed 1,455 passengers, with more added in the final week. Families, visitors, and enthusiasts all contributed to a lively and enjoyable summer season.
The annual railway barbecue brought the volunteer team together for a relaxed day of food, conversation, and a special train ride basically a well‑earned thank‑you for the hard work that has gone into the railway throughout the year. There was also interest from visiting enthusiasts about arranging a future group visit, a welcome sign of the railway’s growing reputation.
Looking back, August 2025 was a month defined by progress, teamwork, and momentum. A major new building began to rise, the site became tidier and more functional, workshop projects advanced, and the passenger season thrived. It was a month to be proud of, and a strong foundation for the work still to come.
