It started off fresh on site, but the heat and humidity crept up on us after lunch. Only a small team was in today, yet we still managed to run trains and push several projects forward. It was the first of the summer kids’ activity days, with four trains running and a respectable number of passengers carried.
The crew rotated so everyone could get lunch and keep essential jobs moving. First thing, the tarpaulins were put back over the two Broughton Moor open wagons. Then, the roof of the 18‑inch gauge replica powder wagon received its first coat of grey undercoat, followed by a second coat of red topcoat on the ends. Work continued in the museum building with more interior painting, and the site diesel tank got another round of cleaning.
Wagon B10 was put back on the rails in 83A and moved to the main workshop where it can be worked on properly. The Dough wagon was also moved off the track next to the hoists. All the preparation work on the Dough wagon body was finished this afternoon, leaving it ready for new roof panels to be fitted on Saturday and then painted.
The Wickham trolley was taken for its first full run down the line to Long Walk loop, crossing the first activity‑day passenger train to the amazement of the children waiting on the Long Walk station platform – possibly wondering how they were all going to fit. Afterwards, the Wickham trolley was brought back into shed 83A and lifted onto the hoists so the chassis can be painted and the bodywork panels fitted.
Everything is now in the right place for work to continue. Good progress all round, thanks to the hard work of everyone on site.
