A slight mist hung over the site first thing, but it didn’t linger long. Once the sun broke through, we were treated to another warm, bright day ideal conditions even if the team was thinner than usual thanks to various domestic commitments pulling the Saturday regulars away. With a skeleton crew, we focused on the smaller but still worthwhile jobs.
It was an Open Day at the Mills, so the trains were run as usual. After getting all the display items out early on, three of the old building plaques were retrieved from their resting place outside workshop 83B. They were cleaned down and given a grey undercoat; once that’s fully cured, they’ll be finished in black with white lettering and placed on display in the refurbished ARS2 alongside the fire alarm stand.
While the trains were running, more tidying was done around the site, followed by cleaning two spare wall signs found in shed 83A. These were then hung in museum shed 83C, where they now look rather smart.
Elsewhere on site, a pair of metal skid frames was fabricated ready for moving the two new wagons joining us later this month. The afternoon was spent making a new adjustor arm for the alternator on Tinkabell and fitting the new alternator belt. A new non‑locking door handle was installed on the cab of Gilbert, followed by the usual steady stream of workshop tasks.
A quiet day overall, but one with solid, steady progress, the kind that quietly moves everything forward.
