A bit cool and dull on site first thing, but the sun eventually came through and it turned into a fine autumn day. Only the core team were present early on, with numbers increasing as the day went on.
Two team members met with the contractor on site to agree the final preferred method of materials handling to avoid track damage from heavy lorries. As a result, the team moved one of the Bishopton chassis off the turntable siding to a position in front of shed 83E for easier access, and relocated one of the Powfoot wagons from the end of the display siding to create loading space.
Another team member continued painting the display compressor unit, which is now nearly finished and looking excellent.
A group then assembled part of the scaffold tower and used it to reach the tops of the columns on the shed 83D frame so the final fixing holes for the phase‑two works could be drilled. They then drilled the required fixing holes in the last of the four phase‑two steel columns.
Work also continued on the Dough wagon, with final cutting of the rebates in the new timber upright stanchion that had been shaped off‑site. A trial fit showed only minor easing still required.
Another team member checked the lettering needed for the sides and ends of the Trecwn brakevan and confirmed the correct sizes for producing the stencils.
After lunch, two more volunteers arrived, and the JCB was used to move the ballast wagon onto the display siding for contractor use. The two roof trusses for shed 83D were then moved into place in the upper yard ready for column attachment, and one of the columns was positioned in its allotted space.
Finally, the positions of the concrete slab bases for the shed 83D columns were marked out, and two team members began levelling the ground and setting them in place.
