June was a lively and productive month across the Railway, with steady progress on infrastructure, rolling stock preparation and the first steps toward new covered storage, all alongside a busy programme of passenger operations. The month opened with a Mills Open Day setting the tone for a run of well‑supported public services.
Work on site focused heavily on preparing for future stock protection. The final section of the new siding was ballasted and tamped, and attention turned to creating temporary shelters ahead of the major construction of shed 83D. Track improvements continued, including adjustments to pointwork and the installation of an extended check rail that required further testing but showed promising results. Several shunting moves were completed to reposition wagons for future restoration, including relocating the Dough Wagon and assembling the Cordite Train rake.
Progress on the old main line siding was a recurring theme throughout the month. Volunteers dug out and cleared the formation, moved track panels into place, installed sleepers, and fish‑plated the new sections together. By mid‑month, the first vehicles were able to be pushed onto the extended track, a small but satisfying milestone after considerable manual effort. Work also began on the framing for new shelters, with steel components unearthed, cut, drilled and prepared for assembly.
Rolling stock and machinery received attention too. Brake stanchions were removed from a chassis destined for conversion, axleboxes were freed and greased, and the JCB benefitted from new fuel tank fittings and repairs to the diesel pump. The Dough Wagon saw early conservation work, including removal of rotten timber and the roof. Meanwhile, the Wickham trolley project advanced steadily, with fabrication and fitting of new components throughout the month.
June also brought several operational days, including school visits, Mills events and a busy Car Rally day. Passenger numbers varied with the weather, but highlights included 112 passengers carried during the rally and multiple well‑received school party trips. On all days the Railway delivered a reliable and enjoyable service.
Toward the end of the month, construction of the new stock shelter at the old main line siding accelerated. Columns were levelled, bracing installed, and the structure began to take shape. Roller shutter slats were moved into position for cladding, and the first tarpaulin end wall was fitted. By the final weekend of June, two‑thirds of one side was clad, and the emerging building was already transforming the appearance and functionality of the yard.
Overall, June delivered visible progress, strengthened infrastructure and a growing sense of momentum as preparations continued for the major projects ahead.
