A big rearrange to get the Yard in order

26 04 08

A warm, almost summery spring day on site always seems to lift the pace, and this one was no exception. With the sun beating down after lunch, the place felt unusually bright and energetic, even with a slightly smaller team than usual while one of our regulars recovers from hand surgery.

The day became a satisfying sequence of practical wins. With the help of the site’s JCB, we set about reshaping the yard: the sea mine was lifted from its temporary perch in the upper yard and settled into its new home beside shed 83C, where it finally looks as though it belongs. The diesel tank followed, shifting from its long‑standing spot next to ARS2 to the fresh plinth by shed 83B. Four bulk bags of donated sand were next hauled out of the car park and placed neatly beside workshop 83B, close to where they’ll eventually be put to use. Even the material piles in the upper yard were reorganised to extend the new car park, giving us a little more breathing room for staff parking on busy Saturdays.

After lunch, a delivery of moveable fence panels arrived from the far end of the site. By some small miracle, we had exactly the number required to complete entire barrier run we had planned. Another job crossed off the list, and a rare moment of perfection.

Inside ARS2, the last of the scaffold shelving came down and the remaining odds and ends were cleared, leaving the space ready to be restored to its original operational state. Then it was over to shed 83C, where we reshuffled the wagon spares inside van TO183 to bring the ammunition‑box load display to the public side its one of those small but meaningful tweaks that makes the whole place feel more considered.

Meanwhile, the new lighting conduit run between 83C and the container was completed, quietly ticking off another behind‑the‑scenes improvement that will make life easier for everyone.

Overall – one of those days where steady, physical progress accumulates into something genuinely transformative. A full day of work, and we called it a day at half past two as it was getting rather warm to work comfortably.
